Support from our discretionary hardship fund is available for households where financial hardship has been caused by changing circumstances, and they are unable to pay their council tax bill.
If you already receive council tax support, you don’t need to apply.
There is no automatic right to this support - it is given case by case.
What is financial hardship?
Being unable to pay for basic needs like food and housing.
Who can apply?
You must either:
- receive council tax support, or
- need extra help to cover the gap between your bill and your discount.
Exceptional hardship award
This is extra help if your council tax support isn’t enough. Payments come from a limited fund and are not guaranteed.
How we decide
We look at:
- your council tax support and remaining bill.
- efforts to reduce your council tax.
- your financial, medical, and living situation.
- your income, savings, and expenses.
- any exceptional circumstances.
- the availability of funds at the time of your application.
Payment amount and duration
We will tell you how much you receive and for how long. You may not get the full amount needed.
Can you re-apply?
Yes, but each application is reviewed separately, and approval is not guaranteed.
If you disagree with our decision
There is no independent appeal, but you can ask us to review your case. A different decision-maker will review your application.
