Fortnightly glass collections

Glass collections are now fortnightly.

Communal glass bins in flats and shared accommodation will also be emptied fortnightly.

Glass collection dates are included on the new bin calendars.

What should go in your glass box?

Yes please

  • Glass should be in a 38 litre box and weigh less than 5.5kg

No thanks

  • Pyrex
  • Light bulbs

Small items including broken glass should be carefully wrapped and put in your refuse bin. Larger items can be taken to the tip (HWRC).

What do I do if my box isn't collected?

If your box isn't collected, you can report it as missed in the same way as you would another bin.

What sort of glass box do I need?

Our standard glass boxes are sturdy plastic with a capacity of 38 litres and handles. You can order one from us online. If you have a similar box, our crews will collect it.

Your box must be under 5.5kg in weight. Each loader picks up around 3,500 glass boxes each week and overloading can lead to injury. If it represents a health and safety hazard for our crews, they will not take it.

We can take as much glass as you need to get rid of, as long as it is in a suitable container and doesn’t weigh too much. More plastic boxes with handles can be used if you have excess.

It's probably worth putting your house number on your box so you don't lose track of it with your neighbour's ones.

Cardboard boxes can break when lifted or be weakened by rain, so please do not use them.

I’ve never had a glass box before and have chosen to use bottle banks

You will need to get hold of the right type of box for our crews to collect glass from your home. You can order a new one through MyEHDC.

If you live in a communal property that doesn't already have a communal glass bin, you (or your landlord) can purchase a 240 litre glass (blue) bin for £55. Please call 01730 234295 to order one.

Removal of bottle banks

Bottle banks across the district have now been removed. This is earlier than originally planned due to misuse of the banks by some businesses and residents.

Why remove the bottle banks?

With fortnightly glass collections, we shouldn't need the bottle banks. Our crews will take excess glass (in a suitable container) from homes so the banks can be phased out. Collecting from households only will also prevent local businesses from using the bottle banks and stop people leaving glass on the floor, which is a hazard to local people and wildlife.

Report a problem at a former bottle bank site

Leaving bottles at a former bottle bank site is fly tipping. You can report fly tipping through MyEHDC
