Fortnightly glass collections
From Tuesday 1 October 2024, glass collections from homes will move from every four weeks to fortnightly.
You will need to put your glass out in a sturdy plastic box with handles. If you don’t have one, or want an extra one, you can order it through your MyEHDC account.
Communal glass bins in flats and shared accommodation will also be emptied fortnightly.
Glass collection dates will be included on the new bin calendars which will be available in September.
Can I use my own glass box?
Our standard glass boxes are sturdy plastic with a capacity of 38 litres and handles. If you have a similar box, our crews will collect it.
Your box must be under 5.5kg in weight. If it represents a health and safety hazard for our crews, they will not take it.
I’ve never had a glass box before and have chosen to use bottle banks
Some bottle banks will still be available for a while, but you will need to get hold of the right type of box for our crews to collect glass from your home. You can order a new one through MyEHDC.
What if I have a party – can I put any excess in a different box as a one-off?
We can take as much glass as you need to get rid of, as long as it is in a suitable container and doesn’t weigh too much. Plastic boxes with handles can be used as a one-off. Cardboard boxes can break when lifted or be weakened by rain, so please avoid using them.
Removal of bottle banks
The skip-sized bottle banks across the district will be removed. Some will be replaced with smaller bins that can be emptied by our glass crews. Others will be removed completely.
All bottle banks will be removed by January 2025.

Why remove the bottle banks?
Once everyone is having fortnightly glass collections, we shouldn't need the bottle banks. Our crews will take excess glass (in a suitable container) from homes so the banks can be phased out. Collecting from households only will also prevent local businesses from using the bottle banks and stop people leaving glass on the floor, which is a hazard to local people and wildlife.
