Statement by Cllr Richard Millard, EHDC Leader
We’re just three weeks into our Spring Clean Campaign and I am already beginning to see the difference across the district.
Our campaign launched on 1 March and saw extra resources ploughed into our street scene teams to get the district looking fantastic.
In that time our mechanical road sweepers have scooped up an incredible 84 tonnes of dirt and debris from our roads, leaving them looking smart and tidy.
And litter-picking teams – from both our service providers Norse SE and community-led volunteers - have picked up enough litter to fill 4,200 purple waste sacks.
Those figures show just how important it was to get the district looking great again. Once the campaign is officially over at the end of April we will carry on the good work to make sure our streets are kept in excellent condition.
Don’t worry if you haven’t seen our roving teams near where you live yet. How fast we move through the district depends on a lot of factors, such as the weather and how long each job takes to complete. Please be patient, we will be with you as soon as possible!
In the meantime, residents and businesses can take matters into their own hands by arranging their own community litter-pick.
If you register your litter-pick through our website we can support you by providing bin bags, hi-vis clothes and litter-picking tools. And after the event we can collect your bagged-up litter and dispose of it for you.
We’re also calling on Hampshire Highways to collect redundant roadside signs that may have been left after works have been completed.
And, to make sure the hard work is not undone, we are increasing litter enforcement patrols at littering hot-spots, including rural areas. Littering is a criminal offence and offenders can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80 or a fine of up to £2,500 together with a criminal record.
