It is an honour as leader of the council to be able to send out a festive message at this time of year. As we prepare for a break from the daily routine, and look back over the year, I remain thankful for our community-spirited residents and organisations that make this district a great place to live.
Whilst a time of joy for many, for some it can be difficult. In November we were pleased to be able to support twelve local communities coming together to enjoy a Christmas meal. We also remember the many Ukrainian families who are part of our community but missing home. Our hope remains for peace.
Ove the past twelve months it has been our aim to help those who need our help, but also to tackle local issues where we find them. We have administered many financial grants to much needed services and facilities. The charities and local volunteers that support our communities are a source of comfort to many of our residents. But we have also taken action against fly tippers and those who disregard planning rules. We will continue to be strong on this in the New Year, so those who break the rules will know that there are consequences.
While we would have wished to end this year on a high, the only ‘high’ to talk of is the excessive housing number the Government has given East Hampshire. Our focus in the New Year will be on how we can deal with this, through our Local Plan. It may be a pantomime to some, but even Robin Hood didn't want to build all over the forest.
In the true spirit of Christmas, I would like to wish everyone, even the Rt Hon Angela Rayner MP and her merry men and women, a very joyous Christmas time, and a prosperous new year.
