Order your £12 trees now.
Order by 8 February and collect on Saturday 24 February from pick-up points across East Hampshire. Limited stock available.
These fruit trees are available as part of PeCAN’s (Petersfield Climate Action Network’s) Fruit Tree in Every Garden project which this year aims to plant 800 fruit trees and 2.5km of new hedging across East Hampshire.
The first round of the project this year saw 350 trees picked up by East Hampshire residents and all of the free hedging has now been reserved.
We’ve supported PeCAN through our Grow Up! project, using money from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (see below). The Tree Council is also supporting the project, making these trees - which would normally cost £25-£35 - only £12 each and the hedging completely free of charge.
Why are trees so important?
Trees are a beneficial addition to most gardens, but in residential areas they are very important, helping with climate regulation and air filtration, and providing valuable habitats for wildlife. Trees, shrubs, and hedges provide nesting places and materials, food sources and cover for a great variety of creatures. With almost half of Britain’s ancient woodland having been destroyed in the last 50 years, the need for these habitats is greater than ever, and you can help by planting a tree in your garden.
Why are hedges so important?
The Native Hedging Mix contains a mixture of 65% hawthorn and at least five other native species to create a traditional hedge. The other five variable species are usually made up of blackthorn, field maple, dogwood, crab apple, guelder rose, dog rose, and hazel.
None of the plants are poisonous to livestock, and they provide a diverse habitat that encourages wildlife who feast on the fruits, seeds and berries the hedge provides. It also creates a natural corridor for the movement of wildlife, and RSBP says that these hedges provide support for up to 80% of our woodland birds.

If you choose to collect your trees from Petersfield Community Garden, you'll also be able to join free workshops on how to plant and raise trees and hedging plants, how to prune, and how to sow wildflower seeds at Hedge Fest, a PeCAN event, from 10.30am-1.30pm.
