Marking three years of Ukrainian defiance

Monday 24 February is the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In solidarity with the people of Ukraine, we’ll be flying the Ukrainian flag at our offices.

Many families in East Hampshire have welcomed Ukrainians into their homes, with 58 current hosts in the district.

We’ve been working to support Ukrainians in the community as well as providing support and advice for their hosts.

Councillor Catherine Clark, Chairman of East Hampshire District Council, said:

“This is a difficult anniversary, but we celebrate the defiance of the Ukrainian people and the generosity of spirit of East Hampshire residents who have opened their homes to provide a haven for Ukrainians fleeing war.

“The council will continue to support our guests to be active members of their communities and give them opportunities for them to socialise, advocate for each other and live more independently.

"In the past year, we have held four family events in partnership with a range of local providers with 41 children aged 2-14 years attending to try out a range of new activities such as climbing, swimming and archery.

"It is impressive to see the Ukrainian-led initiatives in East Hampshire such as Creatful's Ukrainian Weekly Art Classes, the Two Colours Ukrainian Choir and the Cold Coffee podcast through Shine Radio.

"On Tuesday 18 February, we held a Ukraine Wellbeing drop in event in Petersfield to offer the adult community a space to come together and support each other at what we recognise is an extremely difficult time for them."

Hampshire County Council (HCC) provides payments of £500 a month for hosts through the Homes for Ukraine or Ukraine Permission Extension visa schemes. This has been confirmed until the end of March 2026. Find out more on the HCC website.

If you can open your home to a Ukrainian family or individual, please visit our website to find out more.
